2023 Nissan Rogue vs. 2023 Mazda CX-5: Which is right for you?

2023 Nissan Rogue vs. 2023 Mazda CX-5: Which is right for you?

When the Nissan Rogue was redesigned a few years ago, it added a lot of new technologies to go along with a remarkable new interior, a bold exterior design, and a range of new connectivity, safety, and driver assistance systems. The Rogue also improved under the hood, delivering better performance and enhanced efficiency to go along with a new three-cylinder engine that arrived later on. That gave the new Rogue class-leading fuel economy to go along with something that had always stood out on the Rogue, the interior space.

All of these elements are at the heart of what makes the new Rogue so popular in Canada, and certainly a model worth considering in the compact SUV segment. The 2023 Mazda CX-5 is one of its direct competitors, and although it has quite a bit to offer it can’t best the Rogue in terms of interior space and advanced driver assistance technology.

The 2023 Nissan Rogue offers more cargo space

We buy a compact SUV for a variety of reasons, but chief among them is the need for more interior space. In terms of cargo capacity, the Nissan Rogue is hard to beat with over 1,100 liters of cargo space behind the rear seats. Compared to the Mazda CX-5, the Nissan Rogue 2023 offers nearly 300 more liters in the trunk. This is a significant difference. Ultimately, the Nissan Rogue is one of the most welcoming SUVs in Canada in its class when it comes to cargo space while the CX-5, despite its other qualities, is one of the smallest models in this segment.

Increased safety in the Nissan Rogue

Another feature that distinguishes the 2023 Nissan Rogue from the 2023 Mazda CX-5 is the presence of safety and driver assistance technologies that are exclusive to Nissan's SUV. The Rogue is the only SUV in its class to offer ProPilot technology, which not only warns you of potential road hazards, but also offers functions that assist in routine driving operations to improve comfort and peace of mind.  The Rogue offers a range of steering assist features that can keep you in your lane, and the Rogue can even automatically slow down if it detects a curve ahead or if it detects that you are getting off the highway. We're talking about a system that's more akin to the driver assistance technologies found in German luxury cars than a traditional compact SUV.

Remarkable efficiency

The Nissan Rogue is also more fuel-efficient than the Mazda CX-5 thanks to its new three-cylinder turbo engine. On average, this engine consumes 7.6 litres per 100 kilometres, whereas the CX-5 consumes more than 9.0 litres per 100 kilometres. Furthermore, for the same price, this engine outperforms the 2023 CX-5's entry-level 2.5-litre four-cylinder with 201 horsepower and 225 lb-ft of torque versus 187 horsepower and 187 pound-feet of torque. The turbo engine in the CX-5 is more powerful, but it is also much more expensive (over $45,000) and less fuel efficient. The Rogue's turbocharged three-cylinder engine costs around $36,000.
