The 2025 Nissan Armada will feature a newly developed twin-turbo V6 engine producing 516 lb-ft of torque, a 103 lb-ft increase over the previous V8 model. This new powertrain enables faster acceleration, improved towing capacity of up to 8,500 lbs, and better fuel efficiency.


Innovative Engineering Boosts Performance


Nissan's engineers have incorporated several cutting-edge technologies to achieve this significant power boost. The turbochargers feature a small compressor groove that reduces turbulence and noise by 4 dB. The turbine wheels are crafted from Mar-M, a nickel-based superalloy typically used in jet engines, to enhance durability under extreme conditions.


Sho Takahashi, senior manager in Nissan's Engine Engineering Department, stated, "Within Nissan's development team, there is a treasure trove of knowledge. We didn't just build a powerful engine - we created a solution that meets the needs of today's drivers, whether they're adventuring off-road or navigating everyday commutes."


GT-R-Inspired Technology Enhances Drivability


The new Armada borrows technology from Nissan's high-performance vehicles. A "scavenger" oil pump, originally developed for the GT-R, improves lubrication during high g-force driving. This feature allows the Armada to maintain high power output in challenging conditions, such as climbing steep desert dunes.


To ensure consistent performance across various environments, engineers tested the engine in 13 different states, from Minnesota's winter to Death Valley's summer heat. The 9-speed automatic transmission has been tuned to deliver power smoothly, with adjusted gear ratios for quick yet refined response.


Efficiency and Environmental Considerations


Despite the significant increase in power, Nissan has focused on improving fuel efficiency and reducing emissions. The engine utilizes increased fuel pressure and longer piston strokes to optimize power while lowering environmental impact. Electric intake valve timing enhances throttle response, contributing to a sportier driving experience.


Dave Kiesel, manager in the Powertrain Performance Group at Nissan's Arizona Testing Center, explained, "With increased torque and a wider gear ratio, drivers will feel confident in their vehicle's ability to accelerate smoothly and powerfully, no matter if they're merging onto the highway or navigating tough terrain."
